The Anti-Uranium Mapping Project is a photo documentary that shares the stories of those affected by uranium mining on the Navajo Reservation through the use of an interactive mapping website. But I want to do more than share their story, I want to give them a voice. The photo documentary will show my family’s personal experience of living next to a coal mine and the environmental issues around their experience that affects all U.S. citizens. The impact and destruction that has resulted from mining toxic resources like coal and uranium has endangered the Reservation’s natural resources. Not only is it important for me to voice my opinions and share the evidence of the environmental catastrophes caused by giant corporations but I am also creating this work to share the experience of discovering my own Native heritage and the importance of it’s preservation.
